Roles and Responsibilities of the MDM In-charge

What the teacher in charge of the meal is expected to do each day and month.

Who the MDM In-charge Is

In most schools the headmaster designates a teacher as the Mid Day Meal in-charge. This person is the day-to-day manager of the meal — not the cook, but the supervisor who makes sure the meal is planned, prepared safely, served fairly and recorded accurately. It is a position of trust because it involves public funds, free food grain and the welfare of children.

Daily Responsibilities

Stock and Procurement

The in-charge manages rice and ingredient stock — raising indents in time, recording receipts and issues, and reconciling consumption with the meal register. Running out of an ingredient mid-week or letting stock spoil both point to weak stock management, so this task needs steady attention.

Managing Cook-cum-Helpers

The in-charge supervises the cook-cum-helpers, keeps their attendance, arranges substitutes when needed, and ensures their honorarium claims are accurate. A respectful, well-organised working relationship with the helpers is central to a smoothly run kitchen.

Records and Reporting

Keeping the meal register, stock register and payment records consistent — and aligned with the daily report — is one of the in-charge's most important duties. Using the calculator to produce a dated class-wise report each day makes this far easier and keeps the cost and quantities tied to the attendance.

Monthly and Audit Duties

At month end the in-charge consolidates the daily figures, completes the monthly summary, and prepares records for any inspection or social audit. Being audit-ready is simply the result of doing the daily tasks well throughout the month. Done consistently, the role is manageable and deeply valuable to the children it serves.
